Common Questions About Coaching Certification
How do you get certified as a coach?
Most coaches get certified by enrolling in a coach training program that teaches coaching skills, ethics, and practical tools. Many programs include live practice, feedback, and observed coaching sessions.
Some programs are independently run, while others are accredited through larger organizations such as the International Coaching Federation. The right program depends on your goals, budget, and learning style. Make sure to check program reviews, the number of coaching hours you will amass by graduation, and any affiliations before signing up.

Is it necessary to become certified to be a life coach?
No. In many places coaching is not a licensed profession, which means certification is not legally required to call yourself a coach.
That said, certification will help you build your confidence, skills, structure, and credibility as a coach, plus it’s an interesting journey of self-exploration which is incredibly valuable on its own. And, bonus: You’ll get a ton of personal coaching as part of any certification program. Yay! Bottom line: Coaching certification *is* valuable, but it does not automatically create clients or guarantee business success, nor is it required to be a coach.

What does CPC mean?
CPC stands for “Certified Professional Coach.” Some coaching training and certification programs grant the CPC designation upon completion of their program. Typically, this means the coaching education is aligned with International Coach Federation (ICF) competencies and standards, although some training programs may grant a CPC title based on standards separate from the ICF.
Can I still be a coach if I’m not certified?
Yes. Many successful coaches are not certified. Clients often choose coaches based on experience, communication style, trust, niche expertise, and the results they help create.
If you are not certified, it becomes even more important to develop strong skills, clear ethics, and a solid offer that solves a real problem. However, if you have the time and energy to get certified from a credible coaching school, it’s a wonderful thing to do and we recommend it.

Will certification help me get clients?
Certification is rarely the deciding factor unless you work exclusively with companies or organizations in the corporate coaching world, which do often require certification and a certain number of coaching hours as a baseline.
Certification will, however, help you be a better coach (which is a good thing!). So please consider it.
For most clients certification may support credibility, but business skills like marketing, sales, referrals, and clear positioning usually matter more when it comes to getting people to pay you. This is true of corporations too – while they will look for certification, you still have to market to get in front of them! So please get certified, but don’t skimp on your business skills.
