Common Questions About Choosing a Coaching Niche

Do I need to choose a niche or can I just take whatever clients I want?

You can technically work with anyone you want, especially when you are new. But from a business standpoint, being known for helping a specific type of person or problem always makes marketing much easier *and* less exhausting, and it makes you much more credible as a coach. You don’t seem desperate by trying to help everyone.

The best news: When people understand exactly who you help, referrals increase and potential clients recognize themselves faster.

How do I find my coaching niche?

Your niche usually lives at the intersection of three things: who you understand, what problems you can help solve, and what kind of work you *actually* enjoy doing. Focus on what you enjoy!

Look at your own experience, the people you naturally connect with, and the problems people already ask you for help with. Take a few free clients for a session or two if you need to dig deeper. A niche is most often discovered through action, not through endless brainstorming. Pro tip: We often coach who we used to be, so if you are stuck, start there!

Can I have more than one niche?

Not in the beginning. It confuses your buyers and also will wear you out. Marketing and trying to seem credible in two niches is double the work.

Pick one coaching niche to start, it’ll make your life so much easier (and you’ll get clients faster).

Will it hurt my business if I don’t choose a niche?

Almost always yes. Without a niche, your message can become vague and people may not know why to hire you. It’s hard to know what to write on your website, how to build a compelling offer, what kind of marketing content to produce, or even where to find people to coach. Bottom line: When you try and serve everyone, you often end up serving no one.

So don’t be afraid to niche!

People say “the riches are in the niches”—is that true?

There is truth in that phrase, but it gets oversimplified. A niche does not automatically create money. What it does create is clarity for your clients. They know if you are the right coach for them by how you define your niche.

Put another way: Clarity helps the right people find you, understand your value, and say yes faster. The real benefit is not magic riches, it’s easier marketing and stronger positioning (which, to be fair, does lead to more clients and more money!).

What if I choose the wrong niche?

Then you change it. Choosing a niche is not a lifetime contract. It is a business decision that can evolve as you learn more about yourself and your market. You don’t wear the same clothes at 50 that you did at 15, and choosing a coaching niche is the same. It will evolve as you do.

Many coaches start with one niche and refine it over time. Choosing something now is usually better than waiting for perfect certainty.
